Heavy rainfall that pounded Tangerang City from Saturday (7 March) at approximately 21:00 WIB through Sunday morning (8 March) caused extensive flooding and water accumulation across multiple locations.

Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate to designated shelters due to flooding in several areas, particularly in Periuk Damai where water levels had reached between two and five metres.

According to data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Tangerang City, flooding was recorded across several districts including Periuk, Cipondoh, Karang Tengah, Jatiuwung, Ciledug, Cibodas, Pinang, Larangan, Karawaci and Benda.

Mahdiar, Head of the BPBD Tangerang City Operations Centre, stated that water levels at various locations varied, ranging from approximately 40 centimetres to over one metre.

Affected areas included Villa Mutiara Pluit residential complex and Danau Situ Bulakan area in Periuk District, Ciledug Indah complex and Duren Villa residential area in Karang Tengah District, Candulan village in Cipondoh District, as well as several residential complexes and neighbourhood roads in the Ciledug, Cibodas and Karawaci areas.

“In Larangan District, an embankment also collapsed in Taman Cipulir residential complex, causing water to enter the residential area,” Mahdiar stated.

Officers are continuing mitigation efforts in the field, including monitoring affected areas, inter-agency coordination, water pumping at public facilities, assisting residents in flood-affected areas and establishing evacuation shelters for flood victims.

Through the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (DPUPR), officers are also conducting emergency response operations at Bendungan Polor bridge junction, Kali Angke river and in the Periuk Damai RW 08 area. Additionally, efforts are focused on normalising water flow and evacuating affected residents.

Flooding between two and five metres deep continues to submerge residential areas in Periuk Damai residential complex in Periuk District, Tangerang City.

Residents continued to arrive at evacuation centres, including at Al Jihad Mosque on Sunday evening, as the floodwaters had not yet receded and were still submerging their homes in Periuk Damai residential complex.

Water levels had even inundated the mosque’s courtyard, causing several items of residents’ belongings that had been rescued from their homes to be submerged once again.

As a result of these conditions, approximately 285 families or around 900 people have been forced to evacuate to various evacuation centres.

By Sunday evening, several evacuation centres were filled with flood victims, including at Al Irsyad Mosque in Karang Tengah District, at the Animal Slaughterhouse and Petir Prayer Room in Cipondoh District which accommodated approximately 60 families, Ma’arif Petir Mosque, and Total Persada Sports Hall and Al Jihad Mosque in Periuk District.
