Agam Regency (ANTARA) — A number of residents occupying temporary shelters in Nagari Maninjau, Tanjung Raya District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, have begun cleaning their surroundings and carrying out communal work ahead of the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah.

“Earlier we started with communal work at the prayer hall, and after that I continued cleaning the yard around the temporary shelter because we will soon be fasting,” said Suharmi (70), one of the residents of the Danantara temporary shelter in Agam Regency, on Tuesday.

The elderly woman, who now occupies the temporary shelter with her two children, said that communal clean-up work around their homes has long been a tradition among residents around Lake Maninjau to welcome Ramadan.

Unlike previous years, Suharmi and dozens of other household heads are now carrying out their communal work and cleaning at the temporary shelters, following the flash floods (galodo) that levelled residents’ homes at the end of 2025.

Although she must observe Ramadan in a temporary shelter, this has not in the least diminished the elderly woman’s gratitude in welcoming the arrival of the fasting month.

Similarly, another Danantara shelter resident, Ida Fitri (24), said that ahead of the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah, she and her female relatives have also been carrying out similar activities, namely filling in muddy access roads to the shelter.

“My relatives and I have been filling in several muddy roads because we had heavy rain recently,” she said.

Ida and other shelter residents began occupying the Danantara temporary shelter on Saturday (14 February 2026). For carrying out various acts of worship during the fasting month, including tarawih prayers, shelter residents will use the nearest prayer hall, located approximately 300 metres from the shelter.
