Temple Allegedly Larger Than Borobudur Found in Cimahi: Disbudparpora Provides Clarification

A claim regarding the discovery of a temple in the Cimahi region of West Java has gone viral on social media, causing a public stir. The post even suggested that the discovered site is larger than the Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java.

In a video uploaded by the Instagram account @wearehistorian, several individuals are seen exploring a plantation-like area. Amidst the lush vegetation, a hand is seen uncovering parts of a site believed to be buried underground. The caption stated that the discovery is under public scrutiny, with claims that the complex might exceed the size of Borobudur. However, it noted that researchers are still undergoing excavation and scientific studies to confirm the size, age, and function of the structure.

The post did not specify whether the location refers to Cimahi City or Cimahi Village in the Purwakarta Regency, West Java, nor did it provide a precise village or sub-district. However, it has been confirmed that no such temple discovery has occurred within Cimahi City.

The Chairman of Tjimahi Heritage, Machmud Mubarok, stated that the posts regarding the temple discovery in Cimahi are incorrect and misleading, especially as numerous other Instagram accounts have reshared the video. “It can be confirmed that this is a hoax; it is not a temple discovery in the Cimahi area. Furthermore, the account claiming to be historians is fraudulent,” Machmud said when confirmed on Wednesday (29/07/2026).
