Temanggung Holds Tobacco Planting Initiation Tradition
Temanggung (ANTARA) - The local government together with farmers in Temanggung Regency carried out the Wiwit tobacco planting tradition to welcome the arrival of the tobacco planting season on a plot of land owned by residents on the slopes of Mount Sumbing, Wonosari Village, Bulu Sub-district, on Friday.
Temanggung Regent Agus Setyawan stated that entering the end of April 2026, the initial planting season conditions are considered quite challenging. Farmers still greatly need a water supply to support the early growth of the plants.
“In the mountainous areas, especially the western part of Sumbing to the direction of Mount Prahu, most of the land has already begun to be planted because the availability of water is deemed sufficiently filled from previous rains,” he said.
However, he said, different conditions occur in the southern Sumbing area and rice field areas which until now have not yet started planting.
“The main concern arises if the dry season lasts long. Farmers hope that when the dry season truly arrives, the plants have already entered the intermediate growth phase so they are more resistant to water limitations,” he said.
In addition, he said, farmers hope that rainfall is not too high in the future. Because the tobacco drying process greatly depends on dry weather conditions. The stability of the dry season until the end of the harvest period becomes an important factor in maintaining the quality of production results.
With these conditions, Temanggung Regent stated that synergy between the government, farmers, and industry partners is expected to be able to maintain the sustainability of Temanggung tobacco production amid uncertain weather challenges.
Regent Agus Setyawan added the importance of collaboration between farmers and companies, including partnerships that are deemed able to provide market certainty and improvements in tobacco quality.
