Telkomsat Strengthens AIS Data Services to Support Maritime Industry Digitalisation
PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) is strengthening the capabilities of its Automatic Identification System (AIS) Data service to support vessel activity monitoring and digital transformation in the national maritime sector. This service enhancement comes as industry demand grows for accurate, fast, and reliable maritime data to serve as a basis for decision-making. AIS data, previously used only to determine vessel positions, has now evolved into a source of strategic information capable of depicting shipping activity, trade patterns, logistics movements, and even economic dynamics within a region.
Telkomsat’s Director of Development, Anggoro Kurnianto Widiawan, stated that maritime data has now become a strategic asset of significant value for various business sectors. ‘Maritime data has now developed into a strategic asset with immense value for various industrial sectors. It not only provides information on vessel positions but is also capable of generating insights that support operational efficiency, supply chain optimisation, risk management, and the development of new business opportunities,’ Anggoro said in a written statement on Monday (22/6).
According to him, the need for accurate and real-time maritime data will continue to increase along with the growth of the shipping, logistics, energy, fisheries, insurance, and financial sectors. As the world’s largest archipelagic nation with more than 17,000 islands and shipping lanes that form a crucial part of global trade, Indonesia requires a maritime monitoring system capable of reaching vast and sustainable sea areas.
To address this need, Telkomsat presents a satellite-based AIS Data service that provides a comprehensive collection of vessel activity data. This service enables customers to gain broader visibility of vessel activities across various Indonesian and international waters. In addition to utilising satellite technology, Telkomsat has also deployed a number of terrestrial AIS stations at the company’s operational base locations in coastal areas. This infrastructure is used to strengthen the collection and accuracy of the maritime data received.
Through the AIS Data service, customers can access various information such as vessel positions, vessel identities, shipping routes, voyage history, port activities, and other operational parameters that can be tailored to the needs of each sector. Anggoro explained that advances in satellite technology have opened greater opportunities to provide comprehensive maritime activity monitoring. ‘With coverage capable of reaching vast sea areas, satellite technology enables more comprehensive data collection so that customers can obtain a more complete picture of vessel activities and operational conditions in the field,’ he said.
He added that customer needs are no longer limited to connectivity services but also encompass the ability to process data into valuable business information. ‘Customer needs today do not stop at connectivity, but also how data can be processed into valuable information that supports decision-making. Therefore, Telkomsat continues to strengthen its capabilities in data and analytics to deliver solutions that provide tangible benefits to customers,’ he stated.
