Telkomsat expands satellite connectivity to support maritime sector digitalisation
Jakarta (ANTARA) — PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telk_komsat) is expanding the use of satellite-based connectivity to support the digitalisation of the maritime sector through its Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) STAR service.
This service is designed to meet connectivity needs in regions with limited terrestrial communication networks, including shipping areas extending to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
VSAT STAR offers service capacities of up to 200 Mbps per site, which can be utilised to support communication, data exchange, access to digital applications, and operational coordination while ships are at sea.
Telkomsat Commercial Director Andri Yunianto stated that the high mobility and vast operational coverage characteristic of the maritime sector require connectivity support that does not depend on land-based network infrastructure.
“Through VSAT STAR, we want to ensure that limited land network coverage does not become an obstacle to maritime operational activities. Satellite connectivity allows ships to remain connected to support communication, data exchange, and various digital needs that are increasingly important in modern operations,” said Andri.
According to Andri, the availability of connectivity during voyages is a key factor in supporting the implementation of various digital systems in the maritime sector. These needs include communication between ships and control centres, information transmission, inter-unit coordination, and the use of applications requiring network access.
Telkomsat is currently utilising VSAT STAR to support the operations of patrol vessels from the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. This connectivity is used to support surveillance, prevention, and law enforcement activities against goods traffic violations within Indonesian customs areas and the EEZ.
The use of the service on these patrol vessels demonstrates the need for connectivity that remains available when ships move through areas with limited land-based communication infrastructure. In such conditions, satellite networks serve as a primary option for maintaining communication and data exchange during the execution of duties.
In addition to providing network capacity, Telkomksat provides hardware support and technical services that can be customised to meet the operational needs of users. This is intended to ensure the continuity of connectivity in operational environments that differ significantly from land-based network usage.
The development of maritime connectivity services is part of Telkomsat’s efforts to expand the use of satellite technology across various strategic sectors. With coverage that does not rely on the availability of terrestrial networks, satellite connectivity can be used to support digital activities both on land and at sea.
Telkomsat continues to develop satellite-based services to address connectivity needs in regions facing geographical and network infrastructure challenges, including the maritime sector, which requires continuous access to communication and data during voyages.
