PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat), a satellite operator under the Telkom Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNIVITY, a provider of space-based connectivity infrastructure for telecommunications operators. This cooperation marks an initial step for Telkomsat and UNIVITY to explore various collaborative opportunities and develop satellite-based connectivity solutions to support Indonesia’s telecommunications needs. The two companies will examine potential uses of satellite connectivity, including Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) architecture and future Direct-to-Device services. The collaboration will be directed towards leveraging the space-based network capabilities and advantages owned by both companies. The MoU also reflects a shared commitment to exploring the strengthening of sovereign satellite connectivity capabilities for Indonesia. One aspect to be studied is the utilisation of domestically located earth station infrastructure integrated with future VLEO constellations. Telkomsat and UNIVITY will also evaluate the potential development of a hybrid multi-orbit architecture, integrating the reliability of Telkomsat’s geostationary satellite network with UNIVITY’s VLEO system. This integration is aimed at delivering secure, resilient, and adaptive connectivity solutions tailored to national needs, including supporting public sector priorities and national security applications. Anggoro K. Widiawan, Director of Development at Telkomsat, stated that satellite connectivity continues to play a vital role in supporting Indonesia’s digital ecosystem, particularly in remote and geographically dispersed areas. He expressed hope that the MoU with UNIVITY would allow exploration of how evolving satellite architectures and future non-terrestrial network capabilities could address the country’s growing connectivity demands. As a national satellite operator, Telkomsat possesses capabilities in integrating satellite and terrestrial communication services through its satellite assets, earth station infrastructure, operational expertise, and understanding of national regulations. Founder and CEO of UNIVITY, Charles Delfieux, noted that Indonesia is one of the world’s most dynamic connectivity markets, presenting opportunities for the convergence of terrestrial and space-based networks. He expressed hope that the partnership would explore how future satellite connectivity solutions can complement existing infrastructure and support new applications over time. UNIVITY is developing a Very Low Earth Orbit constellation utilising 5G spectrum owned by telecommunications operators to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity as a complement to terrestrial networks. The cooperation is expected to strengthen the development of hybrid multi-orbit connectivity and open opportunities for the utilisation of future satellite technology.
