TelkomGroup and Partners Strengthen Indonesia's Digital Gateway with NCC Submarine Cable
A strategic collaboration to strengthen Batam’s position as a digital hub connecting Indonesia and Singapore to the global market. PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), an operating company of PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom), together with BW Digital and with the support of Nongsa Digital Park (NDP) as a strategic partner, successfully landed the Nongsa Changi Cable (NCC) submarine cable at NDP, Batam, on Monday (20/7). This achievement marks an important milestone in strengthening Indonesia’s digital connectivity with the regional area while supporting the development of increasingly reliable and competitive digital infrastructure capabilities.
Present at the NCC cable landing ceremony were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Airlangga Hartarto, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore Gan Kim Yong, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Singapore Hotmangaraja Panjaitan, Managing Director Business-2 of Danantara Indonesia Setyanto Hantoro, Deputy Governor of the Riau Islands Nyanyang Haris Pratamura, as well as the Boards of Directors of Telkom, Telin, BW Digital, and Nongsa Digital Park.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated, “Indonesia’s digital transformation needs to be supported by tangible infrastructure and increasingly strong connectivity. The NCC becomes the physical foundation for the formation of a new digital corridor connecting Indonesia and Singapore, while further strengthening Batam’s position as Indonesia’s digital gateway. The presence of the NCC is expected to strengthen the strategic position of both countries in the global digital ecosystem and value chain, while opening up space for the growth of investment, innovation, and new technology-based economic activities.”
This cable landing momentum signifies significant progress in the construction of the NCC towards operational readiness. The NCC is one of two Batam–Singapore submarine cables developed by TelkomGroup, alongside the Indonesia Singapore Cable System (INSICA), to strengthen digital connectivity between Indonesia and Singapore. As part of the Indonesia Cable Express (ICE) ecosystem, the NCC will also support the growth of the digital economy in the region.
“Strategic investments like the NCC are important because strengthening digital sovereignty and infrastructure can be a catalyst for innovation, competitiveness, and growth across various industrial sectors. The presence of this infrastructure is expected to create an economic multiplier effect by encouraging the growth of various industries in Batam and Indonesia as a whole, which will ultimately contribute to strengthening national economic growth and resilience,” concluded Managing Director Business-2 of Danantara Indonesia Setyanto Hantoro during a press conference session.
With a length of approximately 50 kilometres and a capacity of 24 fibre pairs, the NCC is built to meet the increasing demand for high-capacity and low-latency connectivity, driven by the rapid development of cloud services, hyperscalers, artificial intelligence (AI), and data centre interconnections in Southeast Asia. The successful landing of the NCC at the most strategic landing point in Batam represents the tangible support of the Indonesian Government in opening a new digital corridor to strengthen network resilience, expand the diversity of connectivity routes, and enhance the scalability of digital networks between Indonesia and Singapore.
More than just enhancing regional connectivity, the NCC infrastructure is expected to accelerate the development of Indonesia’s digital ecosystem through increased digital infrastructure investment, the development of world-class data centres, and the creation of new opportunities for digital industry players. This project also reinforces Batam’s position as Indonesia’s strategic digital gateway connecting the national digital ecosystem with regional and global markets.
In her remarks, Telkom President Director Dian Siswarini affirmed, “Through the sustainable development of digital infrastructure, TelkomGroup is committed to strengthening Indonesia’s digital sovereignty while delivering a tangible impact on national digital economic growth. The NCC is a manifestation of strategic collaboration between Indonesia and Singapore in building an increasingly connected and competitive digital ecosystem. This strategic infrastructure not only strengthens Indonesia’s digital connectivity and resilience but also provides greater route diversity and connectivity for Singapore as a regional digital hub, thereby creating benefits for both countries.”
Similarly, Telkom’s Director of Wholesale & International Service Budi Satria Dharma Purba assessed the NCC as an important part of TelkomGroup’s strategy through Telin in building reliable international digital connectivity. “The NCC opens a new digital corridor between Indonesia and Singapore as part of the Indonesia Cable Express. This infrastructure not only increases international connectivity capacity but also supports the growth of the cloud, AI, hyperscaler, and data centre interconnection ecosystem that forms the foundation of the region’s digital transformation. Together with the subsequent development of ICE, TelkomGroup will continue to expand a digital connectivity ecosystem capable of meeting the needs of global customers and digital industry players in Southeast Asia,” Budi explained.
On the same occasion, Chief Executive Officer of BW Digital Ludovic Hutier said the collaboration between BW Digital and Telin is a strategic step in delivering world-class digital infrastructure in the region. “The successful cable landing of the NCC reflects our shared commitment to delivering digital infrastructure that serves as the foundation for digital development in Southeast Asia. Together with Telin, we are building a connectivity platform ready to meet future demands to support the region’s increasing need for cloud services, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and data centres.”
