Telkom workers to hold rallies

JAKARTA (JP): Some 3,000 employees of state telecommunications company PT Telkom in Central Java and Yogyakarta have planned to stage rallies here to protest an agreement to sell assets in their office to their affiliated satellite provider, PT Indosat.

Labor union chairman of Telkom's Yogyakarta and Central Java division, Syahrul Akhyar, told the media on Wednesday the employees would hold the rallies on April 24 and April 25 at the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and the office of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy.

Syahrul said the Telkom workers decided to go to Jakarta after their letters sent to the government, in which they requested an opportunity to discuss the matter, were not responded to.

"We are fighting not for our own interests, but the company's and in particular the state's because Telkom assets will be very strategic in the future," he said as quoted by Antara.
