Telkom University Bullying Case: One Student Expelled

Telkom University has imposed heavy and moderate academic administrative sanctions on two students from its Faculty of Industrial Engineering who were involved in an alleged bullying incident at the university’s men’s dormitory. The heavy sanction is expulsion from the university.

Telkom University Rector Suyanto said the decision was made following an investigation of those involved in the incident, which took place at about 8pm on Friday, 9 October 2026, at the men’s dormitory.

“The students are from Telkom University’s Faculty of Industrial Engineering. Academic administrative sanctions have been imposed on two students. The sanctions were determined based on the results of the investigation and the applicable rules,” Suyanto said at an online press conference on Sunday (11 October).

Ratri Wahyuningtyas, Telkom University’s Vice-Rector for Admissions, Student Affairs and Alumni, said one student had received a heavy sanction, while the other had received a moderate sanction.

Ratri said the university’s heavy sanction was dismissal from the campus. However, she did not provide details of the moderate sanction imposed on the other student.

“In general, when a heavy sanction is imposed at Telkom University, it means expulsion from Telkom University,” Ratri said.

She added that investigations were continuing into other people suspected of being involved. The university was still verifying each person’s role before deciding on further action.

Ratri said the sanctions had been determined with due caution to ensure that decisions were consistent with the facts and applicable rules.

“All decisions are made on the basis of due caution, because many matters are involved, and we want to carry everything out in accordance with procedure, based on the facts and in line with the applicable laws and regulations,” she said.

Earlier, a video allegedly showing the bullying of a new Telkom University student circulated widely on social media.

In the footage, a student appears to threaten another student with air freshener ignited by a flame.

The video shows a student, who is not wearing clothes, directing a spray of air freshener, ignited with a lighter, towards another student’s face. The incident was said to have taken place at Telkom University’s student dormitory on Friday (9 October).
