Telkom to expand services

JAKARTA (JP): The state-owned PT Telkom Jakarta office will
start a major expansion project soon to meet public demand.

Bambang Riadhy Oemar, a director of the office, said in a
press release on Thursday that the project, called Expanded
Jakarta Area project, will be divided into five packages.

The first package is the construction of telephone exchanges
in five locations in Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi areas. The
telephone exchanges will bear a total of 69,500 lines.

The second and third packages are the updating of 67,000
existing lines in 14 locations, mostly in Tangerang, by Remote
Line Unit, Bambang said.

The fourth package is the construction of transmission digital
junction network facilities, while the fifth package is the
development of locally-made cable networks, he said.

"The agreement with contractors for the first and second
packages were signed on Feb. 1," he said.

A consortium of Sumitomo Corporation, NEC Nusantara
Communication and Humpuss won the contract for the first and
second packages, while a consortium of PT INTI and Siemens won
the contract for the third package, he said.

The fourth package will be carried out by a consortium of
Tomen, Fujitsu, Furukawa and Silkar. (sur)
