Telin Develops 14 Submarine Cable Projects to Strengthen Global Connectivity
Telin, a subsidiary of Telkom Indonesia, is developing an international submarine cable network through its Indonesia Cable Express (ICE) programme, which encompasses 14 submarine cable projects to strengthen Indonesia’s connectivity with Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
The submarine cable projects are not being built all at once, but rather in stages according to the needs of each corridor. Telin CEO Abdul Rahman Ansyori explained that execution is being carried out gradually, taking into account existing network capacity and the needs of the digital ecosystem.
“ICE Cable is Indonesia Cable Express. It consists of 14 submarine cable projects that will connect Indonesia to the rest of Asia, to Europe, the Middle East, America and Asia,” said Abdul Rahman after a press conference at the Bali Annual Telkom International Conference (BATIC) 2026 in Nusa Dua, Bali.
Abdul Rahman added, “We are executing the first staging gradually. We are looking at which corridor we want to secure. We already have several cables.”
Director of Wholesale & International Service at Telkom Indonesia, Budi Satria Dharma Purba, said that Telin’s submarine cable business has so far focused on three main corridors: Asia, Asia-America and Asia-Europe. However, Telin is now beginning to explore opportunities in other regions, including the Middle East and Latin America.
“We are also exploring. Perhaps some time ago media colleagues also knew that Telin expanded to the Middle East. We have started opening offices and so on. That is part of our initiation,” said Budi.
He continued, “So we certainly want to look at business opportunities elsewhere, outside of Telin’s current comfort zone.”
Despite continuing its expansion, Telin emphasised that every investment is made with strict business calculations. Abdul Rahman said submarine cable investment requires substantial capital, so it must be ensured that every development has the potential to provide a healthy return.
“The investment plan will continue and will be carried out in accordance with the group’s direction. But we will do it very prudently and very carefully to ensure that every rupiah we spend will always return to the country,” said Abdul Rahman.
The development of this submarine cable network is part of Telkom and Telin’s efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s position in global digital connectivity while anticipating the continued growth in demand for data and digital services.
