Teenager Killed in Firework Explosion in Ponorogo

A firework explosion has killed a teenager in Dukuh Cuwet, Plosojenar Village, Kauman District, Ponorogo Regency, East Java on Sunday (1 March) afternoon.

In addition, another victim sustained serious injuries and required intensive care treatment at Batarangin General Hospital.

The Ponorogo Police are investigating the fatal firework explosion case.

According to reports, the fatal firework explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon around 5:00 p.m. West Indonesia Time (WIB).

The deceased victim was R (16), a resident of Plosojenar Village. Another victim, T, from Sukorejokini District, underwent intensive treatment at Bantarangin General Hospital.

Eyewitness Siswanto stated that the explosion sounded extremely loud, startling nearby residents. He was not far from the location when the incident occurred.

“I heard a very loud explosion sound, and then immediately went to the location,” he said.

Upon arrival, he witnessed the severely damaged house and two victims lying in front of the residence.

Another resident, Endra Dwiono, reported that the explosion could be heard from approximately three kilometres away from the incident site.

Police are investigating the suspicion that the explosion originated from homemade fireworks.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Unit of Ponorogo Police who received the report immediately went to the location and conducted crime scene investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Several pieces of evidence were also secured for investigation purposes.

Authorities urged the public not to manufacture or detonate fireworks as they pose risks to the safety of oneself and others.
