Teenager Dies After Police Shooting in Makassar; Iptu N Named as Suspect
A police officer, Iptu N, has been named as a suspect after allegedly shooting Betrand Eka Prasetyo (18) to death while dispersing a clash involving toy guns that shoot jelly pellets in Makassar, South Sulawesi. The case is being handled by Propam Polrestabes Makassar and is still under investigation. The sequence began when the Rapocini Police Sector chief reported via a handy talky (HT) that a group of youths were suspected of playing with toy rifles on a street. The report said the youths intercepted pedestrians, and were alleged to have acted violently, pushing and kicking passing motorists, causing public unrest. ‘These actions are very disturbing to the public,’ he said. In response to the report, Iptu N headed to the scene. On arrival, he found a teenager named Betrand Eka Prasetyo (18) actively dealing with a motorist. Seeing the situation, Iptu N stepped out of his car and arrested Betrand, while firing a warning shot. ‘When Iptu N got out of the car, he immediately arrested the suspect, holding him while firing a warning shot,’ he said. However, during the arrest, Betrand Eka Prasetyo reportedly tried to flee and resisted. In the struggle, the pistol still in Iptu N’s possession reportedly discharged and hit the back of the victim. ‘As he wriggled, the pistol in Iptu N’s hand discharged accidentally,’ he added. The victim was then taken to Rumah Sakit Grestelina for initial treatment, but due to limited medical equipment he was referred to Rumah Sakit Bhayangkara Makassar. ‘By the time he arrived at Rumah Sakit Bhayangkara Makassar, Betrand Eka Prasetyo had died,’ he concluded.
