Teenager jailed for killing mom's lover

JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta District Court sentenced an 18-
year-old man to three years and six months in jail yesterday for
beating to death his mother's boyfriend.

Presiding judge Asmar Ismail found the defendant, Munadi,
guilty of killing Nano Waryono, 39, in a park on Jl. Kembang
Sepatu in Central Jakarta on June 29.

"As you are still young, you must improve your behavior during
the sentence," Asmar said.

Munadi, who was speechless after the verdict, and prosecutor
M. Syafei both accepted the sentence.

Syafei, who charged Munadi under Article 170 of the Criminal
Code, had asked the court to sentence the defendant to six years
in jail.

Munadi burst into tears when relatives visited him at the
court's detention center yesterday.

"I didn't make an appeal because I'm afraid the judge would
give me a heavier sentence," he said.

Syafei had told the court that Munadi became angry when he saw
his 40-year-old mother, identified as Muhini, and Nano returning
home about 9 p.m after watching a movie.

Syafei said that Munadi then repeatedly hit Nano in the face
and smashed his head into the ground before leaving the man lying
on the ground.

He said Nano died the following day at Persahabatan Hospital
in East Jakarta. (jun)
