Teenager jailed for beating

DILI: The Dili District Court sentenced a 15-year-old youth to four months in prison and one year's probation on Tuesday in the beating of a magazine reporter.

Liban Cavin Soares was one of five men charged with attacking Gaudensius Mau, the Dili-based correspondent for Tiras, on Nov. 27 last year in front of a market kiosk.

Indictments against the men said they believed Mau was an intelligence agent, Antara said.

Liban was tried separately because he is a minor.

The other defendants, Jose Antonio Soares (23), Jesus Ribeiro Verdial (16), Americo Sero (20) and Jacob Fernandes (20), received identical sentences of 10 months in jail on March 13.

The prison terms of the men will be adjusted to include the period in custody.
