Teenager faces court for killing mother's lover

JAKARTA (JP): An 18-year-old boy was indicted at the Central Jakarta District Court yesterday on charges of beating to death his mother's boyfriend.

Prosecutor M. Syafe'i said the defendant, identified as Munadi, killed Nano Waryono, 39, in a park on Jl. Kembang Sepatu in the Kramat subdistrict, Central Jakarta on June 29.

Syafe'i said Munadi was angry when he saw his 40-year-old mother, identified as Muhini, and Waryono return home about 9:30 p.m. after watching a movie.

"From that moment he hated Waryono and was intent on torturing him," he said.

Later that night when Munadi saw the man eating at a rice stall alone, he approached him and asked him to go to the park, saying that he wanted to talk about something important, Syafe'i said.

The defendant punched Waryono in the face repeatedly until he fell to the ground, he said. Then he allegedly smashed Waryono's head into the ground before leaving the unconscious man in the park.

Local residents, who found Waryono the next morning, rushed him to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta, he said.

No rooms were available at the hospital, so Waryono was taken to the Persahabatan Hospital in East Jakarta where he died later that day from brain injuries.

Syafe'i said police arrested Munadi, who was hiding at his relative's house in Bogor, on July 2.

Munadi was charged under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of nine years in jail.

Presiding judge Asmar Ismail adjourned the trial until next week to hear witnesses' testimonies. (jun)
