Teenager arrested for murder

JAKARTA (JP): Police detained an 18-year-old resident of Wijayakusumah subdistrict in West Jakarta for allegedly killing a 65-year-old neighbor, Siti Aisyah, early Thursday morning.

Police at Tanjung Duren station said the suspect, identified only as Budi, was attempting to steal the woman's small black-and-white television along with two of his friends.

Aisyah, a retired elementary school teacher, was found dead in the living room. She was facedown and had a gash at her left temple and a bruised left eye.

Witnesses said residents in the neighborhood immediately entered the house upon hearing unusual sounds at 3:30 a.m. when the victim was struggling with the three men.

Budi, who is the son of the community head in the neighborhood, was then assaulted by the residents when he reported tried to flee by bajaj (three-wheeled vehicle) with the 14-inch television, while his two accomplices managed to escape the people's anger.

Gempar Setiyono, the victim's nephew, said he wondered why the suspects did not take a bigger, color television which was in the same room.

"If all they need is money, why would they take that television which is out-of-order?" Gempar said at the morgue of Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.(01)
