The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, and digital transformation is driving major changes in the world of work. Amidst these changes, choosing a technology-based study programme is considered a strategic move for the younger generation to prepare for future careers.

Industry demand for digital talent continues to rise. Various sectors such as data and AI, digital marketing, software and IT, cybersecurity, and financial technology (fintech) require human resources with digital skills relevant to industry needs.

Head of Cyber University Campus, Ibnu Alfarobi, stated that current changes in company recruitment patterns demonstrate the importance of mastering digital skills from the university level. “Companies today do not only look at diplomas or academic grades, but also the practical abilities of prospective employees. Therefore, students need to be equipped with industry-relevant skills from an early stage,” Ibnu said.

He noted that technology-based education can no longer be viewed merely as formal education. More than that, it is a long-term investment that determines a person’s readiness to face changes in the world of work. Technology-based study programmes generally offer curricula that are more closely aligned with industry needs. Students not only learn theory but also engage in various projects that help them understand the application of technology in the real world.

“Project-based learning allows students to get used to solving real problems. This experience becomes an important asset when they enter an increasingly dynamic and competitive job market,” Ibnu said.

Several technology-based fields of study are expected to remain in demand over the next one to two decades. These include Information Systems, Data Science and AI, Digital Business, Financial Technology (Fintech), and Information Systems and Technology focusing on data and digital system protection.

However, Ibnu assessed that student success is not solely determined by the choice of major. Universities also play a crucial role in providing a learning ecosystem that aligns with the developments of the digital industry. “Universities need to present industry-based curricula, flexible learning, internship opportunities, and collaboration with the business world so that students gain relevant experience before graduating,” he said.

As a Shaping Digital Future Leader, Cyber University (Universitas Siber Indonesia) is developing an education model integrated with industry needs. One of its flagship programmes is the Company Learning Program (CLP) 3+1, which allows students to study for three years and undertake a one-year internship at a company. Through this programme, students have the opportunity to hone their technical skills while understanding professional work culture while still being students. This approach is expected to accelerate graduates’ adaptation when entering the workforce.

Ibnu added that the AI era should not be seen as a threat, but rather as an opportunity for those who can adapt and continuously develop their competencies. “Technology will continue to evolve. Therefore, the ability to learn, adapt, and master new skills is the key for the younger generation to remain relevant and able to compete in the future,” he concluded.
