Technical Study for Pelican Crossing at Tendean Footbridge Site Nears Completion

The Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) is studying the installation of a pelican crossing as a temporary replacement for the Tendean pedestrian overpass (JPO) in South Jakarta, which was dismantled after being hit by a lorry. Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Budi Awaluddin said the study would be completed in the near future.

“The Jakarta Provincial Transportation Agency is currently conducting a technical study for the installation of a pelican crossing, a pedestrian crossing facility in the form of a zebra crossing equipped with pedestrian traffic lights, at the location,” Budi told reporters on Sunday (19/7/2026).

Budi said the study was being carried out with safety considerations in mind, with several factors being analysed.

“The study is being conducted with consideration for the safety of pedestrians and road users, through an analysis of traffic volume, road geometric conditions and traffic flow characteristics at the location,” he said.

According to him, the results of the technical study will form the basis for preparing the installation of the pelican crossing at the former Tendean JPO site. He said the study would be completed in the near future.

“In the near future, the Transportation Agency will complete this technical study as the basis for preparing the installation of the pelican crossing,” he said.

“So that the crossing facility built can provide security, safety and comfort for pedestrians, motorised vehicle users and the wider community,” he added.

Previously, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung asked the Jakarta Transportation Agency to coordinate with the Ministry of Transportation to apply for permission to build a temporary zebra crossing at the site of the Tendean JPO, which was dismantled after being struck by a lorry. The zebra crossing is being prepared as a short-term solution.

“So for the Tendean JPO, there will be both short-term and long-term solutions. For the short term, I have asked the Transportation Agency to coordinate with the Ministry of Transportation to request permission on whether it can be used as a zebra crossing in the meantime,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Friday (17/7).

Pramono said building a new pedestrian overpass would take time. He said a zebra crossing was needed so that pedestrian mobility could continue to be served.

“Because building a new JPO takes time. But I have also ordered that a new JPO be built as soon as possible,” he said.
