Teachers' wages embezzled
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Governor Herman Musakabe urged the Alor branch of Bank Rakyat Indonesia to repay the salaries of 30 elementary school teachers, allegedly embezzled by its employees.
"We don't want to see teachers miserable because their salaries were embezzled," Musakabe said, Antara reported yesterday.
The alleged corruption happened two years ago when teachers on the Alor island did not receive their salaries, totaling Rp 45 million (about US$21,000), for two months running.
Four bank employees found guilty of embezzling the money have been imprisoned but there is no indication that the teachers will get their money back.
The teachers have also brought the case to the attention of the Vice President in Jakarta, who has ordered Alor regent Hosea Dally to look into the matter. (pan)
