'Teachers should be paid via bank'

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The Southeast Sulawesi branch of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) has proposed that local teachers' salaries be paid directly to their bank accounts.

"The use of bank accounts can prevent the slashing of teachers' salaries by unauthorized officials," branch chairman La Ode Parisa Syalik said on Tuesday.

He said the new system should be put into effect in January 2002.

Teaching staff employed at state-run elementary and high schools have complained of frequent cuts in their salaries for unspecified reasons. --Antara
