Teachers abandon jungle schools
SAMPIT, Central Kalimantan: The Kotawaringin Timur Education and Culture Office said that 60 percent of elementary school teachers in the regency's remote areas had abandoned their posts.
The office's administration division head Yan Nero said that currently there were only two teachers, including the headmaster, in one school while ideally there should be ten.
He said that the teacher shortage was caused mostly by the recent ethnic conflict in the province.
Yan said that the shortage was also because some teachers followed their husbands' new posts while others admitted that they can't stand living in remote areas.
"Many teachers pretended to be Madurese although they are actually Javanese to get the central government's permission to move to Java," Yan said. --Antara
