Teacher wins award from France

SURABAYA, East Java: A teacher in the East Java capital of Surabaya has won France's Palm D' Academie award for her role in developing the French language in Indonesia.

French Honorary Consul Olivier Debray said here on Wednesday that the award would be presented to Hertini Hartoyo, 60, by French Ambassador to Indonesia Herve Ladsous on Dec. 6, during a visit by the envoy to East Java.

Similar awards have been bestowed upon prominent author Pramoedya Ananta Toer and composer Slamet Abdul Syukur.

"This award is an expression of gratitude from the French government to Ibu Hertini Hartoyo, who has taught the French language for dozens of years," Olivier said.

Hertini graduated from the State Institute of Educational Science (IKIP) in Semarang, Central Java. --Antara
