The train accident at Bekasi Timur Station on the evening of Monday, 27 April, resulted in 16 deaths. One of the victims was Nurlaela, a teacher at State Elementary School Pulo Gebang 11 in East Jakarta, holding the position of First Expert Teacher.
In response to the accident, the National Civil Service Agency (BKN) has affirmed the state’s commitment to providing protection and recognition to civil servants (ASN) who were victims in this incident.
“As Head of BKN, I convey my deepest condolences for the passing of the ASN in this incident. The state will ensure that the victims receive the appropriate recognition for their dedication and service,” stated BKN Head Zudan Arif Fakrulloh in his official statement, as quoted from the official BKN website on Thursday, 30 April 2026.
As a concrete follow-up, BKN has issued technical considerations regarding the provision of Widow/Widower’s Pension for ASN who died in the line of duty. Additionally, BKN has determined that ASN employees who were victims of this incident meet the criteria for a posthumous one-level promotion as a form of state recognition.
Furthermore, BKN has ensured that the bereaved families receive various civil service rights, including:
Posthumous widow/widower’s pension at 72% of the base pension
Death benefits due to work accidents
Condolence money
Funeral expenses
Scholarship assistance for heirs
Through these steps, BKN demonstrates its role not only as a civil service manager but also as an institution that provides certainty, protection, and recognition for ASN and their families in times of grief.
