Teacher Protest Ends in Clashes with Police

Thousands of teachers held a demonstration that resulted in clashes with police in Mexico City, Mexico, on Monday (1/6/2026). This unrest adds further pressure to the government in the final moments leading up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Teachers belonging to the National Coordination of Educational Workers (CNTE) union marched towards Zocalo square to demand wage increases and improvements to the pension system, carrying the slogan: “If there is no solution, the ball will not roll.”

Chaos erupted when teachers faced security forces near areas currently being prepared as venues for the “FIFA Fan Festival” ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Clashes were observed as demonstrators pushed and struck metal barriers installed by the police.

Authorities responded by firing tear gas to disperse the crowds. One teacher, Octavio Romero, reported sustaining facial injuries after being directly hit by a projectile launched by the police.

Union leaders stated that the clashes reflect the deep disappointment with a government perceived to have failed to provide an adequate response to their demands. The indefinite national strike organised by the CNTE seeks improved working conditions and increased allowances for educators.

These protests present growing challenges for the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, as Mexico prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, starting on 11 June.
