Teacher in Balikpapan Allegedly Assaulted After Reprimanding Student for Smoking

A teacher from SDN 017 Balikpapan Timur, identified by the initials MA, was allegedly assaulted by several students and their family members. The incident reportedly stemmed from the teacher verbally reprimanding a student who was smoking while riding a motorcycle in school uniform. The altercation occurred on Jalan Lapangan Tembak Lambada, RT 33, Teritip Village, East Balikpapan District, on Tuesday (21/7). The victim sustained injuries to the head and face from the beating. The case is now being handled by the East Balikpapan Police, who are still working to identify all suspects involved in the alleged mob attack. Balikpapan Police Chief Commissioner Jerrold HY Kumontoy, through East Balikpapan Police Chief AKP M Chusen, confirmed on Saturday (25/7) that an official report had been filed. The victim has undergone a medical examination, and investigators are questioning the victim and other parties connected to the event. According to the preliminary investigation, the incident began when the victim was passing through Jalan Mulawarman and saw a student riding a motorcycle in uniform while smoking. As an educator, the victim felt compelled to give a verbal warning, advising the student not to smoke while wearing the school uniform. However, the reprimand was met with a negative response. The student stopped the vehicle and retorted, ‘Why are you telling me off? My own parents have never been angry with me.’ Seeing the situation draw public attention, the victim left to avoid further commotion but was followed by three students, along with the parent and an uncle of one of the students, to the Lambada Firing Range Road area. Upon arrival, the victim attempted to resolve the matter amicably, apologising and explaining that he had only verbally reprimanded the student without any physical contact. Despite this, the student allegedly told his parents that he had been hit by the teacher, a claim the victim immediately denied. The situation escalated when one of the students reportedly said, ‘You talk too much,’ shortly before the student’s uncle allegedly struck the victim. The assault continued with the involvement of three other students who also perpetrated violence against the teacher. A woman seen in the viral video attempting to break up the fight was identified as the victim’s wife, RL, a Sociology teacher at SMA Negeri 7 Balikpapan. Police have identified one of the suspected perpetrators, a student with the initials F, while the identities of the other suspects are still under investigation.
