The editorial in Bisnis Indonesia on Nov. 24, 2000, says the
directorate general of taxation will examine 100 corporate
taxpayers and 50 private taxpayers. This is a good policy as it
may increase the state revenue through increased tax collection.
It also means that justice and prosperity for the common people
will be improved.

It is not possible, however, to carry out this policy
successfully unless the tax apparatuses are clean. In this
context, all tax employees of category II and upward must declare
their assets. If this declaration shows some assets have not been
acquired properly, in the sense that they are beyond the
purchasing power allowed by normal levels of income, then these
assets must first be taxed.

Only a clean broom can sweep clean the dirt. What Coordinating
Minister for the Economy Rizal Ramli has initiated through the
directorate general of taxation must be supported by our prayers
and deeds.
