Taxi drivers licensed in Batam

BATAM, Riau: The Batam city administration announced in a statement on Friday that 600 private cars operating as city taxis had been granted taxi licenses.

The statement said the decision, aimed at promoting security, was based on Bylaw No. 9/2001 on transportation.

Unlicensed drivers have been blamed for contributing to the city's chaotic traffic situation.

Police seem reluctant to take action against the drivers who disobey road rules and traffic signs. --Antara
