Taufik leading at ASEAN chess event

JAKARTA: Taufik Halay took over at the top of the U-16
category after beating Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy of Vietnam in the
sixth round of the Southeast Asian Junior Chess Championships in
Singapore on Tuesday.

The win earned Taufik an overall 4.5 points, according to a
press release here on Wednesday. The same points were scored by
Vietnamese Duong The Anh and Singaporean Luke Leong Chee Ming,
but the Indonesian was ahead of both on Progressive Score.

The tournament, which features junior players from seven
countries in the region, had a break on Wednesday.

The matches, being played under the Swiss system over nine
rounds, will resume on Thursday when Taufik, one of 17 Indonesian
contenders in the event, is to meet Ak Qadri Mohd Omar of
Malaysia. -- JP
