Taufik Hidayat, Suspect in Torture Case, Was Former Debt Collector

Police are pursuing Taufik Hidayat (30), a man suspected of torturing and confining YTR (29) in her boarding house room in the Cileunyi area, Bandung Regency, West Java. West Java Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan has deployed all detective functions to track down the perpetrator. Preliminary identification suggests Taufik previously worked as a debt collector. “The perpetrator is likely a former debt collector; we will trace all his tracks and his record within that debt collection role,” Rudi said at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung after visiting YTR on Tuesday (23/6). Rudi stated that several debt collection companies have been identified and will be questioned to help locate the suspect. “There are several companies we already know of; naturally, we will request statements and seek information related to his whereabouts and behaviour,” he said. Taufik has now been named a suspect. Police have also issued a wanted persons list to restrict the perpetrator’s movements. Additionally, all detective functions have been mobilised to swiftly apprehend him. “A team has been fully formed, including a team focused on suspected narcotics involvement to detect and trace potential links. We are also deploying cyber, general crime, and special crime units to investigate further,” he stated. Rudi noted that the West Java Police are also engaging the Witness and Victim Protection Agency. All witnesses, including the victim, are currently under the agency’s supervision. “Once again, West Java Police will not give any room to perpetrators of violence like this. We will continue to search for his whereabouts and request support from the entire community. This must be uncovered and processed according to applicable law. That is all, thank you for your presence,” he said. YTR is believed to have been abused and confined by her boyfriend Taufik Hidayat for three years in her boarding house room in Cileunyi, Bandung Regency, West Java. The 29-year-old woman suffered severe injuries, including an inability to see normally, a cleft lip, difficulty speaking, and an inability to walk. The alleged abuse case was reported by the family to the West Java Regional Police on Friday, 12 June 2026. The victim’s sister, Melanie Silviani, said the victim is still receiving intensive care at Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung.
