Taufik Hidayat Frequently Quarrelled When Drunk, Leading to Torture

Police have stated that the motive behind the confinement and torture carried out by Taufik Hidayat (30) against his girlfriend, YTR (29), was triggered by the influence of alcohol. West Java Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan said that according to the suspect’s confession, arguments frequently occurred when Taufik was under the influence of alcohol. “Every time he consumed alcohol, he would argue with his girlfriend. The quarrels then led to abuse,” Rudi said during a press conference in Bandung on Tuesday (23/6). In the initial examination, the suspect also admitted to all his actions and expressed remorse. “Regarding the crimes he committed, he confessed to all his actions and expressed regret for what he had done while under the influence of alcohol,” he stated. Police are further investigating the suspect’s mental condition by involving experts to uncover further motives and the background of his actions. “Because what he did is something abnormal, outside the usual behaviour of a person. This is sadistic,” Rudi said. YTR was allegedly abused and held captive by her boyfriend, with the initials TH, for three years in his rented room in the Cileunyi area, Bandung Regency, West Java. The 29-year-old woman suffered severe injuries, including the inability to see normally, a cleft lip, difficulty speaking, and an inability to walk. The alleged abuse case was reported by the family to the West Java Regional Police on Friday, 12 June 2026. The victim’s sister, Melanie Silviani, said the victim is still receiving intensive care at Hasan Sadikin Hospital (RSHS) in Bandung City. Taufik had been a police fugitive and moved locations every hour to evade capture. The Governor of West Java even launched a competition offering a reward of Rp250 million for anyone providing information on Taufik’s whereabouts. Taufik was finally arrested on Tuesday night in the Ciparay District area, Bandung Regency.
