TAUD Urges Prabowo to Establish Investigation Team in Andrie Yunus Case
The legal counsel for Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of Kontras, from the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD), has requested that President Prabowo Subianto establish an independent investigation team to investigate the acid attack case. Afif Abdul Qodir, a TAUD representative, stated that the investigation team’s formation must consult with the victim’s supporters and family.
“The purpose is to ensure objective and comprehensive fact-finding,” he said at the YLBHI Office on Monday, 16 March 2026.
Consultation is also necessary, he said, to ensure all perpetrators are held accountable without obstacles from conflicts of interest.
In addition, TAUD also requested that National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo order the Metro Jaya Regional Police Chief Irjen Asep Edi Suheri to immediately reveal the attempted premeditated murder of Andrie transparently and accountably.
TAUD also requested the Attorney General to order the appointed prosecutor to serve as investigating prosecutor. The purpose is to coordinate investigators and public prosecutors. This appointment is regulated in Articles 58 through 60 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (KUHAP).
“In order to accommodate the construction of Articles 459 in conjunction with Article 17 in conjunction with Article 20 of the Criminal Code as well as reach the intellectual actors of this criminal act,” he said.
TAUD also requested the Chair of the National Commission on Human Rights to conduct monitoring and provide recommendations to the president. The recommendations concern investigation into attacks on human rights defenders. “In order to ensure the case is handled accountably and quickly and to prevent recurrence in the future,” he said.
TAUD also requested the Chair of the Witness and Victim Protection Agency to ensure the security and privacy of the victim, victim’s family, witnesses, and supporters until the case is fully investigated. “And there is no further risk of threats,” he said.
TAUD also urged police to investigate allegations of attempted premeditated murder behind the attack on Andrie Yunus. The Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) was sprayed with acid by an unknown person on Thursday evening, 12 March 2026.
Fadhil Alfathan, a TAUD representative, said the attack on the victim was allegedly intended to kill. “The attack on our colleague Andrie Yunus is attempted premeditated murder,” said Fadhil on Monday, 16 March 2026.
Fadhil explained that the perpetrator had full awareness that the acid they used could have fatal consequences for the victim. Especially if the liquid was directed precisely at the victim’s facial area, it would become a deadly attack.
The perpetrator is also believed to have carefully planned the attack before carrying it out. “We suspect there was a series of surveillance processes to ensure the safe execution of the plan,” said Fadhil at a press conference.
Therefore, Fadhil said, the case can be categorised as alleged attempted premeditated murder. This condition is regulated in Article 17 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) regarding attempted commission of a criminal act, in this case premeditated murder.
Andrie Yunus was sprayed with acid while on Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Central Jakarta, Thursday evening, 12 March 2026. Andrie was sprayed with a dangerous solution by two unknown persons. The two persons were riding motorcycles that came from the opposite direction to Andrie.
Kontras Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya said the perpetrator sprayed acid to the front of Andrie’s body. After that Andrie collapsed onto the road. “The victim immediately screamed in pain until he dropped his motorcycle,” said Dimas, Friday, 13 March 2026.
The corrosive chemical liquid hit the right side of Andrie’s body, such as the eyes, face, chest, and hands. Some of the victim’s clothing also melted from the acid. Medical examination results showed that Andrie suffered serious burns of 24 per cent.
