Environmental damage within the Taman Hutan Raya (Tahura) conservation area has now reached thousands of hectares due to unlicensed activities. According to data compiled by the Task Force (Satgas), approximately 4,000 hectares of land in the conservation zone have been affected by illegal mining. The figure for illegal plantations has doubled, with the affected area estimated to have expanded to 8,000 hectares. Beyond large-scale land exploitation, the complexity of issues in Tahura was previously compounded by illegal logging. However, authorities assess that timber looting has gradually declined and is no longer the primary economic driver for local communities. “Wood is now mostly utilised independently for building houses or bridges, rather than being traded on a massive scale,” said Task Force representative Edgar.

Despite the declining intensity, Edgar emphasised that authorities are not turning a blind eye to any violations in the protected area. Cases of illegal timber use that were uncovered have been pursued legally and reported to the Kutai Kartanegara Police. The same firm stance has been applied to the mining sector. Edgar confirmed that all eight illegal mining cases handled by the Task Force have been fully processed through the legal system. “All of them have been completed. Several individuals have been named as suspects and the process has proceeded to trial,” Edgar concluded.
