Tarwiyah Iftar Du'a: Arabic, Latin, and Virtues
Tarwiyah fasting is a recommended sunnah observed on the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the day before the Arafah fast. This act of worship is highly encouraged during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. For Muslims observing it, the moment of breaking the fast is a particularly auspicious time for supplication.
In essence, the supplication for breaking Tarwiyah fast is the same as for other fasting types, whether obligatory Ramadan fasts or other voluntary fasts. Below are two commonly used versions:
Arab: اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّحِمِيْنَ
Latin: Allahumma laka shumtu wa bika aamantu wa ’ala rizqika afthartu birahmatika yaa arhamar raahimiin.
Translation: “O Allah, I have fasted for You, believed in You, and broken my fast with Your provision, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.”
Arab: ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Latin: Dzahabaz zhama’u wabtallatil ’uruuqu wa tsabatal ajru in syaa Allah.
Translation: “Thirst has gone, veins are moistened, and the reward is assured, if Allah wills.”
For those wishing to observe this fast, the intention should be recited during the night or before dawn. The wording is:
Nawaitu shauma tarwiyata sunnatan lillaahi ta’aalaa.
Translation: “I intend to fast the Tarwiyah sunnah for Allah the Almighty.”
Observing the fast on the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah carries specific merits. According to scholarly opinions, the following are its virtues:

Based on the Hijri calendar, 8 Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 AH falls in mid-June 2024. However, the official date in Indonesia is determined by the government’s moon-sighting ceremony.
- Is it permissible to combine Tarwiyah fast with qadha Ramadan?
According to the majority of scholars, it is permissible to combine the intention for a voluntary fast with an obligatory qadha fast, provided the primary intention is to make up missed Ramadan fasts.
- What is the difference between Tarwiyah and Arafah fasts?
Tarwiyah fast is observed on the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah, whereas the Arafah fast occurs on the 9th (when Hajj pilgrims stand at Arafat).
