Yogyakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Anggoro Eko Cahyo, President Director of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI), says the banking sector can help determine the direction of fair and sustainable economic growth. Bank lending, he argues, can act as the engine of growth for particular sectors while enabling the wider economy.

‘This is where the role of Islamic banking lies in building a fair, transparent, and sustainable economy that benefits all. The economy is not only for profit; so how can we at BSI push SMEs? We will finance SMEs so their growth is sustainable,’ Anggoro said at the Jogja Financial Festival on Saturday, 23 May 2026.

He stressed that the SME financing undertaken by BSI adheres to sustainability principles. He said BSI is entering the ecosystem with Shariah principles, such as pesantren, halal lifestyle, hajj, and umrah.

‘Halal lifestyle occupies the third position in the Islamic economy. So if we look at it this way, Indonesia is number three, and the banking sector can steer the direction of the economy, lifestyle and fashion. We see potential of Rp5,000 trillion if everyone supports the halal ecosystem because we have the largest population,’ Anggoro said.

BSI also provides mentoring for SMEs so they can grow sustainably.

‘This is the role of Islamic banks, whether we can lead transparency and sustainability; SMEs are mentored to be more sustainable,’ he added.
