TEMPO Interactive, Bandung:The state-owned forestry company Perhutani has projected teakwood production coming from a 1,8 million hectare area to 10 times the size within 20 years. “We do this by replacing the existing teakwood gradually along with the Perhutani plus variety” said Haryono Kusumo, the Perhutani acting director, in Bandung yesterday.

The plus teakwood is a variety developed by Perhutani. Normally, teakwood can only be cut when it is 60 years old. However, with the same cutting diameter as a normal teakwood, the plus teakwood can be cut in just 20 years. Last year, the plus teakwood was planted on a 20.000 hectare area. This year, more teakwood was planted on a 30.000 hectare area.
