Tarakan, Republic of Indonesia – Immigration law enforcement is increasingly important amid rising cross-border mobility and challenges in border surveillance. Understanding of practices in monitoring foreigners and handling refugees is being introduced to law students.

Tarakan Class II Immigration Office (TPI Tarakan) provided material on the practice of immigration law enforcement during a Practitioner-Teaching session at the Faculty of Law, University of Borneo Tarakan, on Wednesday 21 May 2026.

Head of the Immigration Information and Communications Technology Section at the Tarakan Class II Immigration Office (TPI Tarakan), Heycal Syams Kharadine, attended as a speaker in the event.

In his briefing, Heycal explained various duties and functions of immigration, from visa issuance, passport services, residence permits, foreigner surveillance, to immigration law enforcement.

Students were also given explanations about refugee handling, cross-border surveillance in border areas, and interagency coordination in maintaining national security stability.

“Through this Practitioner Teaching activity, we hope students will not only understand the legal theories studied at university, but also know how the enforcement of immigration law is implemented directly in the field,” Heycal said in a press statement, Friday 22 May 2026.

According to him, immigration plays a strategic role in safeguarding national sovereignty while delivering public services to the public.

Tarakan Immigration Office said the activity is part of efforts to strengthen synergy between government institutions and the academic world, as well as to improve immigration literacy among the younger generation.
