Tap water for 3,000 families

TANGERANG: In order to supply tap water to some 3,000 families in Cileduk district, the Tangerang municipal state-owned tap water company PDAM has begun the construction of a water plant in cooperation with PT Bintang Hytien Jaya (BHJ).

PDAM president director Rochyat said the water plant, which required a Rp 8.5 billion investment, would supply 50 liters of water per second to serve the needs of 3,000 families in Cileduk and was expected to be completed by 2003.

PT BHJ will be entrusted to manage water supplies for the district for 25 years and PDAM will receive 5 percent royalty from the private company after six years's of operation.

After 25 years, the assets will be handed over by PT BJH to PDAM.

Separately, Tangerang Mayor M. Thamrin said that he had agreed to the cooperation due to the lack of funds to build a new water plant.

Currently, only 2.5 percent out of the municipality's 1.4 million population can enjoy clean water.--JP
