Tanker burns, sinks off S'pore
SINGAPORE (AP): Two crewmen were hospitalized after a tanker made of wood and carrying 100 metric tons of oil burned and sank in Singaporean waters on Friday morning.
Antipollution vessels were monitoring the waters around the tanker looking for signs of leakage. The vessel sank in the area where ships anchor outside Singapore's port.
The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement that there had been no reports of any pollution from the sunken vessel six hours after it went down.
The crew of the Belize-registered vessel, Samata 3, reported that a fire had broken out at 7:58 a.m. (6:58 a.m. Jakarta Time), the authority said. It took firefighters just over an hour to bring the blaze under control. However, the tanker sank at 9:40 a.m., the statement said.
