Forest and land fires in Tanjung Puting National Park (TNTP), West Kotawaringin regency, Central Kalimantan, are continuing to spread. The flames are reportedly drawing closer to the Tanjung Harapan feeding camp, where orangutans are fed, and are estimated to be only about 600 metres away.

The latest information, as of Thursday (22 October 2026), was provided by Deny Priyatna, a volunteer with the Kalimantan Green Orangutan Foundation (YOHK). Deny said volunteers and several relevant agencies were still battling the fires to prevent them from reaching the feeding camp.

“According to the latest information, the fire is now about 600 metres from the Tanjung Harapan feeding camp,” Deny said, as reported by detikKalimantan on Thursday (22 October 2026).

As well as the area around Tanjung Harapan, volunteers are fighting fires along a trekking route between Beguruh and Pesalat. The flames, which are burning vegetation along the route, are a concern because they could spread to nearby conservation areas.

Deny added that fires had also broken out on YOHK-owned conservation land outside TNTP. The foundation’s team is helping to extinguish the hotspots there.

“This shows that efforts to tackle forest and land fires are not focused solely within the national park, but also extend to conservation land outside its boundaries,” he said.
