Tanjung Priok victims demand compensation

JAKARTA: Eighty five representatives of victims of the 1984 Tanjung Priok incident demanded compensation, restitution and rehabilitation from the government on Friday.

Earlier, prosecutors of the ad hoc rights tribunal demanded that 15 Tanjung Priok victims be given compensation, restitution and rehabilitation worth Rp 33 billion (US$3.9 million).

"We want to show that victims of the incident were not only those 15 people," chairman of the Future Generation Association (YPB) Ahmad Sahi said at the Central Jakarta District Court.

The YPB is an organization of supporters of the islah (Islamic reconciliation settlement) between representatives of the families of victims and Army officers.

However, they had not yet figured out the amount of financial compensation they were seeking.

At least 33 civilians were killed and 55 others injured in the clash between Army personnel and civilians in Tanjung Priok on Sept. 12, 1984. --JP
