Tania Maria brings jazz to Jakarta

Tania Maria, one of the best known female jazz singers of the United States, will give 12 concerts from Dec. 5 to Dec. 10 at the Blue Note Jazz Club and Restaurant at central Jakarta.

Maria, who hails from Brazil and prefers to consider herself a pianist, was ushered into the American music world by guitarist Charlie Byrd, who introduced her to Carl Jefferson, chief of Concords Records. This meeting led to the birth of Maria's first album called Piquant in 1980.

Maria's third album entitled Come with Me won acclaim with not less than 100,000 copies sold. Recently, she has just finished her newest album Outrageous.

Pianist, singer, composer and arranger Maria will perform here with the accompaniment of Mardoqueo on percussion, James R. Sebastian drums and Thomas J. Kennedy on bass. (als)
