Tangled Cables Must Be a Priority, DPRD DKI Urges Bina Marga to Accelerate Organisation

Member of Commission D of the DPRD DKI Jakarta, M. Fu’adi Luthfi, has urged the DKI Jakarta Bina Marga Agency to make the organisation of tangled utility cables a priority programme. According to him, infrastructure development is not enough just to beautify the city’s appearance, but must also guarantee public safety. Fu’adi assessed that the problem of dangling overhead cables has reached an alarming condition. Moreover, the incident of a student from SMAN 6 Jakarta who died after being snagged by a cable is proof that the issue can no longer be postponed. “The utility cable problem must be a priority. Public complaints are very high,” said Fu’adi in a statement on Sunday (12/7). The Chairman of the PKB Faction in the DPRD DKI Jakarta stressed that the government’s success in organising pavements, roads, and public spaces will lose its meaning if the utility problem that endangers citizens’ safety continues to be ignored. “Don’t just fix the surface. The infrastructure underneath must also be sorted out,” he asserted. He reminded that city aesthetic improvements must be accompanied by the acceleration of utility network organisation, especially in densely populated residential areas still filled with tangled overhead cables. “The utilities are still very chaotic. This must be resolved immediately,” he said. Fu’adi hopes the Bina Marga Agency will accelerate the organisation of utility cables throughout Jakarta so that the risk of accidents caused by dangling cables does not claim more victims. He also asked the DKI Provincial Government to thoroughly investigate the cause of the incident, including tracing the party responsible for the dangling cable at the accident site. A student from SMAN 6 Jakarta died following an accident in South Jakarta. She fell from a motorbike that got snagged on a steel cable. The South Jakarta Bina Marga Sub-agency confirmed the cable’s presence.
