Tangerang to plant over 40,000 tress

TANGERANG: In a bid to create more green areas in the municipality, the Tangerang administration will plant 44,000 trees across the municipality involving local non-governmental organizations.

M. Harun, chief of the Municipal Environmental Impact Management Agency, said on Monday that the administration would also build some 50 wells.

"Tangerang is known as an industrial town with more than 1,000 factories polluting the air, land and water daily. We need to create more green areas as the city's lungs by planting more trees," he said, adding that the administration had received Rp 265 million (US$29,444) from the Ministry of Forestry for the program.

He said 36,000 of the 44,000 trees would be planted along riverbanks, and the rest would be spread out in several parks, public cemeteries and residential areas.

"We will also build 50 wells for residents in Benda district because water quality in the district is very bad," he added. --JP
