Tangerang strengthens spatial planning regulation to support MRT and BRT integration
The Tangerang Regency Government in Banten Province is accelerating revisions to its Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) regulation to strengthen and support the planned development of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure in the area.
Head of the Tangerang Regency Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), Erwin Mawandy, said on Tuesday that the local government’s readiness to support the planned mass transport connectivity is reflected in the strengthening of the regional spatial plan.
“The most important aspect is spatial planning. We must prepare, especially the connection between BRT and MRT. This must be incorporated into our spatial planning document regarding the development of the mass transport system,” he explained.
He said the RTRW revision process currently underway at the Tangerang Regency government is still ongoing. The BRT development programme connected to the Kembangan–Balaraja MRT line will be included as a key element in strengthening the regional regulation.
According to him, this is to ensure that this national strategic project has a strong policy foundation at the regional level.
“The BRT/MRT programme will be one of the inputs incorporated into the RTRW as a form of our readiness that this mass transport system is indeed already established in policy at the regional government level,” he stated.
He added that for the Kembangan–Balaraja MRT project, Tangerang Regency, through cooperation between the two provinces of DKI Jakarta and Banten, is still in the finalisation stage of the feasibility study.
“In the feasibility study, the financing side is measured to determine the most feasible option, whether financing comes from the government or whether there is potential contribution from developers,” he said.
Erwin also explained that because the project crosses two provinces, the government will involve a number of private developers in the Tangerang Regency area, including Summarecon, Alam Sutera, Paramount, and Lippo Karawaci, to collaborate in the development of integrated areas.
Based on the design, the MRT line to be built in the Tangerang area spans 30 kilometres and will connect 14 stations, from Balaraja, Cibadak, Pasir Gadung, Bunder, Kadu, Bencongan, Danau Ranau, Kelapa Dua, Kebon Nanas, Panunggangan, Kuncir, Hasyim Asyari, to Karang Tengah in Tangerang City.
The BRT service is being prepared to serve as a feeder connecting these station points with residential areas and community activity centres.
“We hope the BRT will connect to the MRT. So it will be connected to the existing MRT stations so that they are integrated with one another,” said Erwin.
