The Tangerang Regency government has shut down all nightlife entertainment venues and restricted the operating hours of restaurants and eateries during the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah. The policy takes effect one day before Ramadan 2026 begins.

Tangerang Regent Maesyal Rasyid said the regulation is a routine policy implemented every Ramadan to maintain a conducive atmosphere whilst promoting tolerance among religious communities. The policy is set out in a circular letter issued jointly with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

“It is a routine policy — one aspect is that we will issue a joint circular with MUI so that Ramadan can be observed by Muslims and adherents of other faiths in a spirit of mutual respect,” said Maesyal on Wednesday (18 February).

In addition to closing nightlife venues, the Tangerang Regency administration has also regulated the operating hours of restaurants and eateries. During Ramadan, food business operators are permitted to commence operations only from 4pm Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

“From the morning after sahur [pre-dawn meal] until 4pm WIB, they are expected not to open for business,” Maesyal said.

He added that enforcement of the policy would involve regional apparatus organisations (OPD) together with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri).

“Sanctions will be applied in accordance with prevailing regulations,” he said.
