Tangerang Regency Prepares New Landfill Site as Jatiwaringin TPA Fire Continues
Waste disposal from various areas within Tangerang Regency remains normal. We have prepared two hectares of land to be used as a temporary location,” said the Regent of Tangerang, Moch Maesyal Rasyid, in Tangerang on Tuesday.
As the fire control efforts at the Jatiwaringin landfill enter their eighth day, he confirmed that waste collection is still proceeding normally, with approximately 1,200 tonnes of waste per day being temporarily diverted to the newly prepared site.
“However, once this process is complete, we will return the land to its normal state, clean it, and ensure waste is prepared for upcoming waste-to-energy electricity projects,” he added.
He expressed hope that the landfill fire incident could accelerate the realisation of such projects to promote more sustainable environmental management.
“I have held several meetings with the Governor, the Minister of Environment, and the Coordinating Minister for Food. Fortunately, Tangerang Regency is one of the focal points that will serve as a site for waste-based electricity production,” he noted.
He also shared the results of the evaluation regarding the emergency fire control at the Jatiwaringin landfill in Mauk, to ensure that the handling meets its targets.
“On Wednesday (1/7), the firefighting team arrived here at night. By 06:00 WIB the next morning, they had begun working. They have been working at the site through the morning, afternoon, and night. The terrain is fluctuating and not flat, it rises directly. Therefore, we express our immense gratitude to Manggala Agni. The results have been positive,” he explained.
He explained that while some fire points have been successfully extinguished, strong winds remain the greatest challenge for the joint teams on the ground.
“To reach the central areas and the peaks of the waste mounds, which are difficult to access by land vehicles, the Tangerang Regency Government is relying on assistance from BNPB’s water bombing helicopters, which have been operational for the past five days,” he said.
