Tangerang Regency Maintains Emergency Status After Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire
The fire that engulfed the Jatiwaringin final waste processing site (TPA) in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, Banten, has finally been extinguished after burning for ten days.
Although all fire points have been declared extinguished, the Tangerang Regency Government is maintaining its disaster emergency status until 14 July 2026.
Observations by CNNIndonesia.com at the site on Friday afternoon (10 July) showed no more flames or smoke rising from the waste mound. Nevertheless, joint personnel were still carrying out dousing operations at several points to anticipate the re-emergence of hotspots within the waste pile.
Tangerang Regent Maesyal Rasyid said the cooling process would continue to be carried out by personnel from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to ensure no residual hotspots could trigger renewed fires.
“After surveying the entire site, both the western and eastern sectors up to the peak of the waste mound, thankfully no more smoke or fire was found. As directed by BNPB, we will continue spraying water as part of the cooling effort across all areas of the Jatiwaringin landfill,” Maesyal said.
He said the emergency status has not yet been revoked because the government will continue intensive monitoring until the designation expires on 14 July.
The results of the evaluation will determine whether the status is terminated or extended.
“We will see this through until 14 July. After that date, we will assess whether it needs to be extended or whether conditions have eased as they are now. We will see on the 14th,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Riswandi, Head of Tactical Control and Operational Evaluation at BNPB, said the agency remains on standby with personnel and aerial fleet support to assist with fire response if required by regional governments.
“So our aerial fleets, if needed by the Regent or other regional heads for extinguishing forest, land or landfill fires, are ready to assist,” he said.
Riswandi also urged regional governments that operate final waste processing sites to step up mitigation measures during the dry season.
“Going forward, this is a lesson for all of us who have landfill areas to mitigate the potential for fires like the one that occurred here, starting with dousing and other measures, because the weather according to BMKG forecasts is very hot and extreme,” he added.
Artificial pond
Meanwhile, following the fire response, the Tangerang Regency Government said it is preparing the construction of embung, or artificial pond, infrastructure around the Jatiwaringin landfill as part of future fire risk mitigation.
“The Tangerang Regency Government will build infrastructure from Mauk Road to the Jatiwaringin landfill, including the construction of an artificial pond near the site,” said Achmad Taufik, Head of the Tangerang Regency BPBD, on Friday, quoted by Antara.
He said the artificial pond infrastructure is being prepared as a mitigation measure to minimise the recurrence of a similar fire at the landfill.
