Tangerang faces serious pollution

TANGERANG: Tangerang Regent Agus Djunara said on Thursday that due to the rapid growth of industry in Tangerang, the regency was now facing serious environmental problems caused by uncontrolled waste disposal by industrial firms into the rivers.

Djunara said there were 780 industrial firms that produced waste water daily in the regency but only 273 firms treated their water waste before releasing it.

He said 361 industrial firms did not operate their waste treatment facilities properly while 146 had no waste treatment facilities at all.

Most industrial firms emptied their untreated waste into the Cisadane River, causing heavy pollution, he said at the opening of a seminar on the control of industrial waste disposal.

The river pollution worsened with residents also dumping household waste there.

Djunara said that industrial firms that did not have waste treatment facilities should use the land they themselves already provided for public facilities at their respective factories. He also promised to assist them in building waste treatment facilities. --JP
